OIL Pan Torque settings - and Gasket goop?

Anyone know the torque settings on the lower oil pan bolts on a 4.2LV8 (400E)? I need to replace the gasket and don't want to over tighten the pan. Do you use any gasket sealer or just put it on dry?

Tks

Do a search for the torque numbers and if the pan is not bent and not overtightened you will not need any sealant. You do not want to use sealant on the tranny pan.

I use a short 1/4" drive ratchet. This way you have controll over how much torque you put to it. Just watch the gasket and you will see if it is pushing out. If so, back off a little.

I have had the best results with doing pans and soforth by feel alone.

The torque value should be 10NM. However, Benzmac is correct in using the small ratchet and feel. The use of a torque wrench is difficult unless the vehicle is up high on a lift.

Last time I tried using the factory 7-8 NM torque setting, I split the gasket in 3 different places, not sure if the gasket material is inferior or if the pan is not level in those areas?

I think Benzmac may have the answer due to his lengthy experience replacing gasket.

Lower Oil Pan Gasket (4.2L V8)

Gasket $18 - Will post pictures when I do the next oil change and replace the pan gasket. Mechanic says to install dry - no gasket sealer > BOBB;)
