You can run certain 5w30's. Elf makes a lot of nice oils and I know there 5w30 meets MB specs.

MB got away from 0w40, now they recomend Mobil 1 ESP 5w40.

To light of an oil would probably cause a bit more cam and valve train wear, thats the part of the engine that usualy suffers from poor lubrication first.
