20W-50 or 10W30

I have a 1989 S420 with 177K miles, and all seems OK for now. My other two vehicles both take 10W-30. One is GMC Suburban, the other is a Land Rover.
The MB dealer in Atlanta Ga. suggested always use 20W-50, in the 420.
We now live in South Louisiana and retired. Should I keep the 20W-50 or wouldn't the 10W 30 be better for this climate?
thanks

the weight of the oil depends on the climate. read your owners manual and it should tell you

20W50

If it gets cold there, you can knock it back some, as suggested, ... maybe a 15W40.

south Louisiana

Down here it rarely gets to 32 degrees. The heat usually gets to 100 degrees. Retireing from north Georgia, and living in south Louisiana, I just want to use the best oil for the 89 420

Comparing GM vehicles with Mercedes is like comparing apples and oranges.

NOTHING about your GM vehicle is applicable to your Mercedes.

Thank goodness.

I like 15W40 Oils for these cars, and they like the oil viscosity too. I would use a HDEO, Diesel Engine Oil, in your favorite flavor. Mobil, Shell, Valvoline, DELO, Castrol, Pennzoil, etc., come in 5qt. and gallon jugs at Walmart, AutoValue and AutoZone, NAPA.

Why do the big MB V8's enjoy such heavy oils? Cars like the rav4 in my sig and our caravan use like 5w30 or 10w30. Very lightweight stuff. Does it have to do with the oil consumption of the engine?

A lot of European cars are like that. M3's and Ferrari's use Xw60.

I'd use 15w40, which I beleive was factory fill. I'm partial to Delo.

Interesting....what happens to the MB V8's if you run something light like 5w30 synthetic or such? High oil consumption? Timing chain explosions?

I thought MB recomended 0w40 Mobil 1 Synthetic for all engines....?
