Transmissioned Compared
SO,,,I know that there was a change in transmissions in the w140 series between 96 and 97-99 which is considered the best for long lasting, trouble free, least amount of service required. I want to buy an S320 really dont care about the year . any opinions out there?

The electronic controlled trans 722.6 started in 1996. Unless it has been replaced with an updated one (most probably have) it was not a great trans til the 98 modifications. Probably the best durability will be had from a 722.3 trans. I'm not exactly sure which trans the early cars have (a 772.3 or 722.5). Both are pretty good transmissions. I would probably prefer any of the 722.6 units if cost was no issue.

so you are saying buy a s320 98 or 99 cause these models have the updated
electronic transmission (722.6) right? |
I would rather have one of those, yes.

S320 transmissions compared
I don't know where you get the information about S320's and 722.3, or 722.6, transmissions, etc, BUT I own both a 1994 S320, and a 1996 S320 (140.032). Both of them say the same thing on the build plate = the transmission is a 722.508 type. 5 speed, first gear start.
The parts program ( htt:\\epc.startekinfo.com\epc ) also says both cars take the same transmission. I hope this helps with the confusion. Comments, Questions, Corrections? Farrell |
140 body sixes always had a 5 speed and they were a year later in getting the .6 - 97 rather than 96 for the V8s.
