1980 W126 280SE power loss issues

So I have been sorting out a few of this cars problems over the past few days. It's gotten a new set of plugs and wires (cap and rotor are coming) as well as some other essential maintenance related items. The problem it has is not with take off power, but sustained power. If you mash the gas while cruising on the highway, it accelerates fine (momentarily), however the power starts to fade as you keep the gas down. for example, if you are accelerating full throttle from 35 to 80, 70-80 takes forever. If you are running at sustained 70 and want to accelerate to 80, it will do that fine, much much faster than if you were accelerating to 80 from a standstill. The problem seems to be sustained power (any more than 1/2 throttle). I was thinking the fuel pump or filter might be the issue (they do look rather old) however I am also looking for some more suggestions if there is something or other that is a typical cause of this.
