Ash tray handle fell off

The wood handle to the ash tray on my '88 420SEL recently came un-glued. I assume it was because of the heat from being left outside in the sun for several days while getting the A/C fixed.

Anyway, I'd like to reattach it, but I'm not sure what kind of glue to use that would withstand the heat, and it being pulled in/out.

The surface of the ashtray that it was attached to feels kind of like a sticky foam substance, it's hard to describe. What would stick to this well? Superglue? Thanks for any help.

Some use the really sticky double sided tape(that's the foam you're seeing), others use trim adhesive or weatherstrip adhesive(3M). I use construction adhesives around my garage a lot and found subfloor adhesive to work great when my ashtray wood disengaged. I've used panel adhesive and found it not good for the SoCal. greenhouse effect in an automobile (too brittle over time).

Wow, I guess this is a common problem! When I bought my 1987 560SEL the ashtray wood handle was sitting in the glove box. I scraped off most of the black foam with a razor blade and used some 2 ton epoxy to re-stick it. It's been almost 1 1/2 years, and it's still on there. I live in Northern California, so I don't get the SoCal heat, but we have had quite a few balmy days, and it's holding up just fine.
