1986 190E - Known problems???

I'm interested in buying this used mercedes but have no knowledge/background on these type vehicles. This car has 144k showing and appears to be in good shape. Bluebook shows approximate value around $3500.

I'm concerned about maintenance on this vehicle or possible recall issues. Is anyone familiar with this model or any problems? I purchased a mid 80's oudi in the past and it was nothing but nightmares. (Electrical issues)

All advise is appreciated. Please email me directly - coolcat823@aol.com .

Thanks,

Dave:confused:

If I can recall, this has been a subject of a comprehensive discussion before. Do a search and you'd be pleased with what the archives hold.

For the age of the MB, rust would be a factor to look at. Mechanically, its a good built with very lasting impressions. Compared to your Audi, it would have less electrical problems.

I would think its the usual wear and tear on the bushes, engine mounting, and perhaps do have a check on the belts and engine compression.

I've owned an '87 and have an '88. The '88 is a
better car. I believe you will find the general consensus on the 190E is the newer model the
better it is.

Good luck on your future purchases and if you
have limited knowledge on these models (190E's)
have a independant shop that works on Mercedes
check out car before you buy it. Ask owner
to look at service records also, and if you buy
it get them from him for your records.

Check out the rear!

Have the rear end differential checked out as they are prone to pinion bearing & seal failure.

Listen for a humming in the rear(as a function of road speed). Mine used to sound like a fully laden B-17.

A factory rebuilt can be expensive.
