1985 420se fuel pump or pumps??

Hello! I am reviving an 85 420se, it has been sitting for anywhere between 1-6 years...

The reason in the difference is it had tires put on it a year ago, but they were removed from the car, put on, and replaced onto the car without it moving, I'm pretty sure.

On to the real question...does this thing have 2 fuel pumps? I Tested and had power to the 2 pump looking objects underneath the car, pass. side., they felt a little warm but no fuel pressure

I plan on replacing the filter, and possibly seeing if I can remove the pumps and get them working

Are they both the same, if they need replacing what is a roundabout price for each?

I think that the reason you are not getting any responses to your question is that a 1985 420SE is not a US car.

You are also asking for answers that can readily be found online by looking at any of the online vendors - try the "Buy Parts" tab on this site, for instance.

But to comment on your situation. If there are two pump-like things back by the tank, with wiring and fuel line connections, then you have two pumps.

My experience with reviving is that you will need to remove the tank and have it boiled and probably coated. You will need new pumps and a filter. When you remove the main fuel line, there is a strainer that will need to be cleaned. While the tank is out, disconnect the feed and return line at the fuel distributor and blow them out.

With the tank back in and fresh fuel, new filter, and pumps working, connect the feed and fuel lines together at the fuel distributor, jumper the fuel pump relay, and run the pumps for a couple of hours. Then connect the lines to the fuel distributor, and run the pumps for five minutes or so. Then the fuel system should be ready to start the engine. If you take short-cuts, you will almost certainly end up with more problems after the car has run for a while.

You would probably also want to change the oil and filter and spark plugs. With the FP relay and plugs removed, crank the starter until you have oil pressure. Then connect everything up and give it a go.

You may well end up needing injectors, injector seals, a fuel distributor, and a warm-up regulator as well.

Yeah, I have revived a lot of cars and have needed to do many things along those lines...


But this isn't a US car, eh? The original owner told me a story about how a prince from a small middle eastern island owned it, then brought it here to az when he attended college.

This is the 1st german car I've played with, so here's hoping it won't be a bad experience!

Any idea what years or models could interchange? I've searched online a bit, but couldn't find any info. Perhaps cause it's non-US

Yes, there are two pumps and they are in series. The fuel flows by gravity to the lower pump and then under pressure to the next pump. You will see the pipe going from one back around to the other. From there it goes to the filter and on to the pipes to the CIS-E unit on the engine. There is also an accumulator included in the package mounted on the front top of the bracket. Each pump has a check valve at the pressure end and I replaced both of them. There are also copper crush washers.

On mine, one wire was broken so inspect these carefully. The hoses are wrapped around the pieces fairly tightly so watch the routing. The bracket is probably rusty so a good cleaning might be in order.

There is supposed to be a certain amount of fuel delivered in a specific time and I don't know that figure off hand. The amount is meadured at the delivery pipe to the CIS unit.
