W126 steering box questions
Two questions about the steering box on my 91 300SE:
1) Where is the hole through which a pin is set to center the steering for a wheel alignment? If the location is shown in the CD manual, I would appreciate a reference or path as I can't find it. 2) There seems to be a leak starting between the body of the steering box and the bottom piece that houses the seal next to the pitman arm. It isn't a drip, just some seepage at this point. Should I be concerned or should I wait for it to get worse? Thanks, Sixto 91 300SE |
seep from steering box what to do
Why wait for it to get worse? Some preventive maintenance will fix it now. Change the power steering oil. Add a small amount of leak stopper power steering oil from the parts houses.
or, My favorite remedy for seals starting to seep is Marvel Mystery Oil, and use about 1 ounce in the power steering reservoir. |
There is a 12MM(head) bolt at the bottom of the gear box. The special tool is the same sized bolt with a point that you scew into the hole where you removed it from. The steering has to be centered to install the tool.

I just got my steering box replaced (finally!!) and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. I almost want to send my mechanic a thank-you note! My Benz now wants to cruise at 75+ ALL THE TIME now... We took her out for a 200 mile drive last night, and I had her up to 85+ a couple times. Still got 24 mpg including sitting in stopped traffic for 5 miles, and a week of two-mile short trips. I'm going to watch my mileage because all the sloppiness in the front suspension couldn't have helped fuel economy.
