my 87 420sel that i drive 150 miles a day to ft hood and back for work now is having a tranny issue....
i dropped the pan and replaced the fluid and lo and behold i see a piece of metal about an inch long and 1/8th of an inch wide and curved at one end (it curves to the point of making contact with the straight part) transmission will be rebuilt by a local guy in austin along with adding a transmission oil cooler to avoid the overheating total price tag....1100.00 opinions anyone? lyle in austin |

Lyle, it's best to have transmission rebuilds done by a tech experienced with MB transmissions. What symptoms are you having that makes a rebuild necessary? MB automobiles are engineered like no other car ... not sure why your 1987 420SEL would require an add-on transmission oil cooler unless the cooling system has other issues.

from your description it sounds like you found a pce of clutch pack retainer in the pan[probably from front drum which runs 3rd gear]is 2nd to 3rd your issue?
