Thanks Arthur. I guess it will take sometime for to absorb all of it and do something about it. I am starting with the EGR. I will let you know what happens.
You are a very patient and helpful guy and so are so many others here. Kalyan |

Anyone know what a code "8" might be? 1993 400e. The CE Lamp illuminates every 3rd start. Don't matter if I drive 1 mile or 300. BTW I just picked up impalabuilders 400e. Drove car from NJ to Cleveland in little over 7 hours. What a sweet ride (for my wife, I'm doing the SVO '84 300D thing)
Well anyway, I pulled the code from the 8 pin diagnostic connector. It flashed 8 times. (I then deleted it). After doing this I remembered where the 38 pin diagnostic connector lives, so I took out my home-made tester and pulled all the codes. Funny thing is when I got to pin 19 (DM) I got no response from my tester, which makes me believe that pin 19 is disconnected from the DM and put on the 8 pin diagnostic testing connector. An eight on the DM is coolant temp sensor open or closed,,, The other codes I got are: LH-SFI 2, 17, 18 2 -coolant temp 1 open or closed hmmmm 17 CAN Data EAC,,, 18 CAN Data ICM,,, and on socket 7 Cruise/Idle speed control w/o ASR 11 - fuel safety shut-offto LH-SFI Control module Since I just got back from Jersey, after the long bus ride there last night, I'm gonna callit quits for now, even though the adrenalin is pumping me up,,,

DM modules will not allow signal initiation for code retrieve until all emmissions systems have gone thru the self-test procedures after a CE clearing. That goes for all DMs............it is so you can not clear madate failures before inspections

If it is, then why can I erase the codes on the 8 pin test connector? If it's not, what is a code 8 on the 8 pin test connector?

The 8 pin Connector is not the DM. Each pin has a different module. The PB accesses ONLY CE -N/59 module.
The DM is module N/59 and it is the Emmissions/CE lamp module. It is accessed by either the built-in led ON the 8 pin connector OR the 38 pin connector at the DM designated pin# What I am saying is if you clear the DM, you will not get another reading from the DM until the car does a few drive cycles to do it's self test for emmissions. [egr check/up-shift check/ closed loop check/ etc etc ..] It is only after the car does these test that the DM will accept an initiation signal [ that is you and your button] to get any codes . So, after you clear the codes , you can not go back and get ANYTHING until the self test have complited. You have a Cal version , so the PB may or may not be hooked to 19 of the 38 pin. Next time a CE comes on, do not use the built-in PB , go try 19 on the 38 diagnostic connector..that will tell if it is .... Cal version may be different for that 92/93 version..but my info does not show that to be the case. What I am simply saying is don;t expect a code retrieve at 19 AFTER you have cleared DM with PB on the 8 pin connector. And don't expect it on the PB either until the self test have been completed by the ECU.

Thank you, well that explains why I was able to start the car 10 times (but not drive it) and the CE Lamp didn't turn on. Will drive the car some and report back what pin 19 does after the CE lamp illulminates.

Ok I got the same on pin 19 as I did with the built-in pb.
This time I also got a code 26 (upshift delay swithover valve) Cleared both and drove the car. But every time I press on the brakes, an idiot light comes on. I don't have an owners manual, so I don't know what it is, it looks like this,,,

That symbol is for exterior lamp failure. One of you brake lights must be burned out.

This time I also got a code 26 (upshift delay swithover valve) >> Ok ...as I posted , your DM is accessed thru both Diagnostics connectors to N/59 module. You just tried to access the 38 pin after a clear from PB and you can not do that on N/59..... that's all. Delay shift suspect on that chassis will be a bad/leaking cable element down at the trans. Common code...Search " code 26" ..I have some tutorials on it in there. Lamp indicator monitors reisistance values of lamps, so when a brake lamp is indicated, it is best to change them in pairs , with matched set/manufacturer. Also check 3rd lamp.

Ok You all sound like a bunch of smart fellas. Now which one of you would know if there is a relay for the power windows on a 1982 280se=w126 ? My window switch stuck on the up position, thank god the window motor still working when i run power to it from my battrey charger, but none of the windows are working and the fuses are not blown. I recently taken ownership of the car after my dad died, and being a gray market car from germany, no manual, having a hard time figuring anything out on it. Anyone have any info? Thanks' ALEX

Alex,
You may want to simply start a new posting. This one is in the middle of a diagnosis and tagging onto a post that has nothing in common with this post does neither you or the other poster any good. I am sure a seperate post will get you a better response.
