M110 Junkyard Engine

I spotted a Euro 1982 280E in a local Pick & Pull a week ago. Someone had removed the oil cap from the engine, so I looked inside and saw a totally clean camtower. It looked brand new, so I am assuming at least the head was recently rebuilt. After removing the plugs and attempting to turn the engine, what should I look for on the outside for a clue of the block being rebuilt as well? (The engine is not very clean outside). Opinions?

There might be tell tale signs along the head gasket line. It is a long way down from the top of the head on a 110. A few goobers of sealant would give it away as the factory boys would not stand for any of them. A clean head might not necessarily mean much if it has been taken care of. The euro 110 is a very nice engine.

Did you buy the engine?
If you did....Start with cylinder head removal.

I haven't bought it yet. I plan to remove the valve cover there at the junkyard to check the entire cam-carriage, lobes, etc, and then look for new freeze plugs on the block. I'll check the gaskets as recommended. I would like to stay away from removing the head if possible. Any other suggestions?

Borescope to check for scoring and/or cross hatching?

Some day I'll drive my M110
