W124 E 220 Speed Limit?

1 Attachment(s)
Dear All,
I recently bought second hand W124 E 220, which I am currently restoring. When Control Unit was being removed for painting, it had in writing saying "180 (km/h) Speed Limit (see attached picture) which previous owner does not have any idea.

W124 E 220 sports M111.960 engine, which is same as the C220's M111.961. I have not driven this car at high speeds, but once when I tried it hit max of 170 km/h, I believe these engines should do at least 210 km/h presently it does 100 km/h @ ~2500 RPM and redlines @ 6250, peak power of 110KW/@210 NM is @ 55000 RPM.

So my question is can speed be limited my some kind of re-programming the ‘Control Unit’? How does this work? How do I change to factory settings? Also can ‘Control Unit’ from some other model say E 320 be used in E 220?

Thank you

There is speed limitation set into most MB engine controllers. For similar engines the limit can vary by the body they are placed in. Folks that develope performance software often alter these limits, but they are not programmable by any manner of MB authorized tooling.

Erh.. weird..
I've replaced my ECU with the a brand new MB one before (due to wiring loom causing the ECU to short out)...
I've taken the car to 205kmh (seems to have no more to give at this speed) several times..

Oh yes my car is a 94 E220 m111960

Thank you Steve and Jeff,

Did more searching and found out that E 220's released in India were speed limited to 180 km/h due to limitation of JK Tyre in India back then

Now how do I remove the limit? What are the options? Should I buy a new ECU? Is getting tuning chip e.g. from powerchip is an option?

I would imagine that any chipset that works in that controller will remove that speed setting. When they make a performance chip they start with some set of software and probably only change a small portion. It isn't likely they would start with software that had that particular characteristic.

They also are likely in performance software to remove that setting anyway.
