Brakes Failed

ABS light was on and my brakes failed. On my 1989 560 SL. My mechanic wrote the followinf comments : scan and document the ABS codes. code 001-08 voltage supply(circuit 15r), code 002-09 warning lamp(ale15) open/short circuit, code 003-10 control module(N212) was activated, code 004-03 SRS driver air bag Indicator will not clear.Remove and replace listed relays. Indicator will not clear. remove aBS module, package and ship for testing and repair/no faults found with unit, reinstall.Suspect ABS pump faulty, new unit retails for $2100 plus labor. Parts installed: Brake master cylinder,ABS relay, ABS relay, relay/over voltage.
Ok now my questions are: Is my car safe to drive ? The brakes Feel fine. Is there something else i should have my mechanic check? The SRS lite has been on since I have owned the car 5 years ago and not that worried if this is not operational....Thanks in advance...

Is the ABS light still on?

When I bought the SDL the light was on. I replaced ALL the fuses in the fusebox and it went out... Could be a bad fuse or ground causing the light to come on.

If the brakes feel good, and the red brake warning light is not lit I would drive the car. You just might not have ABS so watch it in the rain.

Yes ABS light is still on. Did u have to replace all the fuses?

<<ABS codes. code 001-08 voltage supply(circuit 15r),>>

Check the fuse on top of OVP and make sure you have the correct OVP in there ......there are two types for that year..Cal and Fed.

Sorry How do i do this? and what is the correct type of Fuse?

Arthur Dalton 04-08-2008 12:29 PM

On top of OVP relay..there is a little fuse lid. That opens for fuse access......it is a standard spade fuse.
I think the OVP is behind the right footwell panel on that chassis, next to fuse panel.
Search archives to be sure.

I just normally replace all the fuses when I get a 'new' German car or about every two years. The fuses they use go bad after a while and need to be swapped out. Pretty cheap (~$10) and quick. I do all the reds then all the blues, etc...

I agree........A very good preventive maint. procedure, specially on bullet fuses..and I recommend going to the all bronze/copper..
However, in this complaint, changing all the fuse panel fuses may not address the code he has retrieved for OVP power interruption , coupled w/ABS lamp... which lends itself to getting to that seperate [ and hidden] fuse on top of the OVP... that would be my first suspect.

Please indulge me. first i found the fuse box. it appears there are some fuses missing where the corresponding slots are. Where con i purchase these fuses? Also i cant seem to find the OVP or it fuse. Is it in the same fuse box?

Is you car also idling high?

Your OVP IIRC is just above the passenger side kick panel.

The pictures in this link might help you find the OVP.

Had my mechanic check out the OVP and it was fine,ABS light still on,but brakes feel fine. BTW i just remembered prior to the brakes failing the car did idle very fast. Not sure if the mechanic who did the prior work (see above) replaced the fuses on the OVP, and that took care of the rough idle. I'm planning on bring the car back Monday, any suggestion on what to ask the mechanic to look for? I would hate to have to pay $2100 plus labor for new a ABS system.

Are the wheel speed sensors intact?
