Does anyone have an opinion on plug wires? The choices are the push-on or the screw-on.

There are so many excellent Ignition wire sets available.
I can't see the application of a "Screw on " to a Benz engine considerring the design of the cylinderhead for the sparkplugs.
The "Push on " is what came on my 1987 103983 engine.
I currently have the Jacobs 8.5mm silicone push on Ignition wires.
Any good Ignition wire set similar to mine will satisfy your needs.

What I meant was the factory wires with heat shields versus aftermarket. The quality aftermarket sets seem to be all 8mm. This size won't fit the cap.

The phrase "Push-on" or "Screw-on" was used in reference to the cap type. Early M117 engine cars had holes in the top (push-on) later ones had studs sticking out of the cap (screw-on). For the most part, aftermarket wire sets are poor quality. They sell some decent ones right here at Parts Shop. As far as the ends go, yes... the metal shielded ones are the way to go.
Be wary of aftermarket sets that use "suppression" core wire. Our cars use metal core wire (and non-resistor plugs). A bit unusual for most of the "Parts-R-Us" guys.

It's apparent that 8.5mm ignition wires fit the cap of my 103983 engine or I wouldn't be commenting about them.
The larger diameter wires will not fit in the wire channel on the cam cover and must be routed outside as other non-Benz autos do.
My wires are solid core non-suppresive or resisted, and I use copper cored spark plugs.
The metal covers that come OE, to my understanding from other German machines, are not heat shields but are RF shields grounding a shieth in the spark plug wire to ground at the plug.
This eliminates the static from the ignition you would normally hear on AM radio.
Budget Plug wire sets don't have this shielding.

Thanks much for the advice. I went with the factory wires sold by our benefactors. Solid core with RF shields makes sense with a breaker ignition and a wimpy coil.

Sorry for the delay, but drove the old barge to New Mexico, so I was out of pocket.
You can't go wrong with OEM wires, afterall they performed well before they gave up the ghost.
Not many owners recognize the RF shields as they are, thinking they are heat shields.
On well they do thier job regardless of what we call them.
