560SEL Starter Problems
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, I have a 1990 560SEL with a starter that runs when the key is turned, but it only engages the flywheel maybe 1 out of 4 starting attempts. I'm assuming it is the mechanism that pushes the starter gear into the teeth of the flywheel giving me the trouble.
I was going to replace the entire starter, but I saw a "starter drive" for a fraction of a new starter's price on the parts link that is the suspect portion of my starter unit...see the photo attached. Is this something I can replace on the starter motor myself without specialty tools, or would the wiser choice be the entire rebuilt starter unit:confused: Thanks, |
Can you ear the starter motor rotate?
Do you have the impression that the starter "slips". The teeth of the gear may be worn also. If you are sure it is that part of the starter the culprit, I would first give a try cleaning it. That part is just a kind of clutch (I did it very long time on other cars) where dirt can accumulate. I leave to MB specialists to confirm |
Yes, the motor turns but not the engine. I ordered the part as it was only $12. I'll see what I've gotten myslef into...
