strange knocking or ticking noise...

So all of the sudden, I have this strange noise, thast sounds like the firing order is wrong, but its not, the more rpm the ticks or knocks. my mechanic is charging me $500 to find it out, and well, it just got back from him, so I dont want to be shedding out more money. (got new brake). im getting the crank shaft sensor replaced, cause it would randomly die. So getting that changed for $300. Butbany idea on what this noise could be? Oh its w124 m119 (e420) so yes, hopfully you guys can help, if not, I dont know, you maybe might see a sell add in the car threads.

Has your oil pressure dropped a bit too? If so I'll bet its one of the little oil tubes. M119's are known to do that. Click on the link in the previous post.

mine comes from thw whole engine. and its not really a ticking noise. more like a raspy exhuast system. kinda like bangs from each piston. and my noise never stops.

Is it a knocking, ticking, or chattering noise? You can pull the valve covers off and inspect the top of the timing chain. If the chain is stretch to much it is possible for the engine to jump a tooth and jump timing. Does the engine start with no problems or does it turn slow when you attempt to start it?

In addition, you posted early that you have a coolant leak, is there coolant found on the oil stick? Please give us more information on the noise you hear once the engine is running.

E420, have your tech check the condition of the timing chain tensioner.

it starts just fine, like new. but it performs right, nice and smooth, just this knocking noise. the whole coolent thing, I really have no knoledge in. all i know is, is, that its just a leak and not burning it. its not tivking or chattering. it souns like fire crackers or a cap gun is firing each piston.

Your last description sounds like an exhaust manifold leak.
