How often a "steering damper" should be replaced on a 560 SEL?

How many miles are on the car, if its original then its most likely shot by now. Steering dampers are inexpensive ($20) and easy to replace.

I just put 1 on my 220D, it was shot after 38 years.
Take it off and see if it is any good.
