Mercedes 190 E ignition switch removal
 

Black connector will not release from ignition switch. Key is in 1 position.
Anyone have a clue how to remove it. Any strategic drill location on the switch which I need to replace anyhow. What is holding it on any way? 1986 Mercedes 190e.

Thanks, but I'm trying to remove the ignition switch not the lock cylinder. To remove the ignition switch, I have to release the black wiring connector that plugs into it, but that won't release in key position 1, so I can't get the 3 screws out of the ignition switch that are under the wiring connector to take it off. Does anyone know how to release this wiring connector or what is holding it on?

I thought that it is suppose to release when the key is in position 1.

This information is from a fellow member...his key wouldn't turn so he had to remove everything the hard way.

"The switch assembly should now be free to move around a bit. The electrical connector on the back won’t let go unless you’re at #1. I did a fancy thing that I hope works for you: I took an orbital sander (the same sander I used to rattle the tumblers into position before I ever started this project) and sanded the switch until I could see the 3 screws that hold the electric part, back out of the holes! Now, I had to loosen them a bit with a chisel in between the 2 sections, but it worked. After the screws all backed out. I was able to separate them and pull the switch part out. It’s tight but it will go. Make it happen."

Fixed it. Turned key to position #1. Chain of events: Key turns lock cylinder spindle turns ignition housing spindle turns ignition switch spindle releases switch wiring connector. Turned out that my ignition housing spindle or parts of it sheered off into the receiving ignition switch. So this ignition switch spindle didn't respond to release the wiring connector. Solution--carefully drilled a 3/16th hole through the top slit (there are three) of the ignition switch. (Drilled it straight down into the middle of the switch.) The wiring connector let go! Seems new ignition switch replacement doesn't have this lock tab feature so future problems won't be quite as much of a hassle.

Hi i have a 1992 190d mercedes and when i was removing the igntion switch, the plug got dismanteled and now i have the wires hanging and dont know where each wire goes.

On the barrel there are pin codes which are:
P30
15
30
15X
30
50
15R

The wire colours are as follow:
RED / BLACK (THICK WIRE)
RED (THICK WIRE)
RED / YELLOW (THICK WIRE)
RED (THICK WIRE)
PURPLE / WHITE (THICK WIRE)
RED / GREEN (THICK WIRE) & RED / GREEN (THIN WIRE) - ON ONE CONECTOR PIN!
GREEN / WHITE (THIN WIRE)

Please advise me as to which wire goes into with pin code.

i solved the problem.... the combination is as follows:
P30 - GREEN / WHITE (thin wire)
15R - RED / GREEN (thin & thick wire together)
50 - PURPLE / WHITE
30 - RED
15X - RED / YELLOW
30 - RED
15 - RED / BLACK

high i have a 1992 190e and i am dammed tired of searching for the correct wire diagram can someone help me please!!!! Barrel numbers is 30, 15x, 30, 15, p30, 15r 15t 50,
i have the same wires as a bove but i have another thin black, red, pink wire and have been connecting as above its just i get a short when i connect the battery anyone can help greatly appreciated.

at slk230red, Im trying to remove the whole assembly from the steering column as you show in the picture, how do I remove it? Does the key need to turn? cuz the key tumbler is broken and I cannot turn the key. I tried drilling it but no luck. I have all new units to replace but cant figure out how to remove the assembly from the car or steering column. Thanks any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, my name is Amanda. I have a 1992 190e 2.3.
The only problem I'm having now is removing the ignition cylinder from the locked steering column. I'm looking for a way to remove it with out butchering it. I'd like to save the steering column but the cylinder is going to be replaced by one from a scrapyard *hopefully*.

Help if you can.

You need to use a half inch drill bit when drilling out the lock barrel with a substantially powered drill. Don't drill too deep - just enough to get all the lock barrel bits.

So I've gotten the steering column out with the ignition cylinder and housing still intact. The steering column is locked and the key still wont move. I've tried drilling through the small hole but my bits keep breaking. I tried smashing the aluminum housing against the floor but nothing. I can start my car with a screw driver and all I want is to be able to drive it. How can i remove the housing and cylinder A.S.A.P. without damaging the steering column? I'm willing to butcher the housing and cylinder, I just want/need to drive.
