I think I have a bad air conditioner relay. Can someone tell me where it is located? Frequently when the AC cycles off it will not cycle back on until I switch the igntion off and back on. If I run it at max and therefore it doesn't cycle off it keeps running.

Behind the battery on the 85 2.3 there is a black plastic cover with 2 push ins , you will see 2 relays with white writing on top of them one is fuel injection/f pump the other is a/c if im not mistaken one closest to the firewall is a/c

hope it helps

Can you tell me what the symptoms were that led you to conclude the relay was bad? Did you replace it and did it cure the symptoms? I have an '86 and the A/C has a mind of its own. Comes on when it wants to and not when I turn it on. I have had no luck with the advice sofar. Thanks, Jim

Jim

It works fine on cool days and cool nights. It cuts off on hot days and will come on again only if I shut the engine off and back on again. The fact that it works fine when everything is cool leds me to the assumption that the ice out switch is not the problem. The fact that external heat is always a factor made me look for a faulty relay in the engine compartment and I couldn't find one Until SRI said to check behind the battery.

I haven't been able to check it out yet because we are having a cool spell and the AC is working. I've been having this problem since July of last year.

Robby,

When you get to changing it out, it has the word "Klima" in white letters on the top surface, and is around an inch thick, two inches wide and two to two and a half inches high. There are two next to each other and the one you want is behind (closer to the firewall) the first one. Let me know if it works out. Thanks, Jim

I too am having the same or similar problems in my 86 190 2.3. Cool mornings and cool evenings are no probelms, blows cold. Hot days(90+) and it will blow semi-cool, and then sometimes even warm air. This car was converted from R12 to 134a recently. During the day when it is blowing warm, I have checked, and the compressor is running. Not really sure what to check next. I would be interested in hearing more about other people with this problem. Thanks...BTW this is a GREAT forum, especially for me, a first time Mercedes owner. Thanks to everyone for all of the great help and advice I have already received.
:p
