1989 300E W124.. need tips on removing governor (722.3)

I want to remove the governor from the transmission to check/clean it.
I'm having problem with 'stacked shifts' and read that cleaning the governor may help.
Can the governor be removed without lowering the transmission?

If I have to lower the transmission to gain access to the governor, do I have to unbolt the flex disk?

I realize I have to put a jack under the trans but I wasn't sure if I had to remove the exhaust pipes and heat shield as well...

Anyone have any idea of approx how long it should take to remove the governor, clean it and re-install.?

Anything I should watch out for?

Any tips comments most welcome...

regards
