Valve cover gaskets?

Is there anything tricky about valve cover gaskets? It seems like it would be pretty simple and straightforward, but then MOST things I try to do seem that way. I was thinking of doing mine as they appear to be leaking a little bit and thought I would polish the cover too while I had it off.

gaskets

Nothing tricky. Don't use any kind of sealer. A light coat of grease on the new gasket will keep it in place while refitting the cover.

Most MB valve covers are cast with the groove that holds the plastic/rubber gasket in place while lining it up with the bolts. Try to avoid tapping on the cover when replacing it, since it may dislodge the gasket from the groove.

Thanks. I'd like to do Max's and I have my eye on another car that may need it's gaskets replaced, too.

Just make sure to not overtighten and start in the middle and work out - just as you would if torquing the headbolts.

Did you ever get your sunroof to close properly?

Dee8go 04-29-2008 07:36 PM

Yep, the sunroof appears to be water tight now. Now, I'm trying to get the rear windows fixed. I got the one on the driver's side done on Saturday. I'm replacing the regulators.

Congratulations on finally finishing the MBZ job from hell! Believe me, I know what you went through with that front SR seal!

If I had not had John Hef's help, I would have never made it! That little channel you have to feed the gaskets into is a real *****!

Are you going to adjust your valves and check the timing chain stretch while the cover is off?

Johnhef 05-01-2008 09:25 PM

No, valve adjustment has been done :), come to think of it, so was the valve cover gasket.

What are you calling the valve cover gasket when you say "they" ??
There's only one. Are you looking at another part?
