Ever hear of this stuff?

Someone told me about some stuff you could put in your gas that guarrantees you will pass the emissions inspection. Ever hear of it?

blueeagle289 05-04-2008 09:28 AM

Would like to know this also

There are some very good additives available ...... is this a special new one??

The one I know of is called "Guarantee to pass". I didn't work for me and made the readings worse (I needed a new O2 sensor). They gave me a refund after I mailed in the receipt. They probably figure most people won't bother and a few will get lucky and pass. It seems that this should be the next subject of Mythbusters. People would rather spend 100 dollars on all kinds of stuff that won't fix their car rather than 30.00 on a O2 sensor that actually might help, or on code scanner that will let them figure out what is going on.

Yeah, that's it, Guaranteed To Pass. I know it sounds like a scam, but I sometimes buy lottery tickets, too, so what the hey!

It was on the shelf with STP and all of that other stuff.

There are no liquid solutions to mechanical problems.

Gimmicks, that's all it is!!

Plain old Techron will help do the same thing.

You *must* make sure there is none of the additive still in the fuel when you have your emissions tested, or you will be "guaranteed to fail."

LUVMBDiesels 05-05-2008 11:17 AM

I think that GtP stuff is mostly methanol. It oxegenates the fuel supposedly lowering the emissions.

I agree that there is no snake oil to fis emissions issues. Just drive the snot out of it to blow away all the carbon, then maybe run seafoam or GM Top Engine Cleaner through it if it has a bad carbon problem, change the plugs, make sure the O2 sensor is working and bring it in.

I used "de-carbonizer" last year on my W124 to "aid" in passing emissions.

Granted, a clogged EGR tube was the real culprit, and after I had that taken care of, I never really had a chance to drive the "snot" out of the car prior to the retest. So I put the stuff in the tank and drove the car as much as I could to get the cat warmed up...the car squeaked by the emissions test!

That kinda disappointed me, as it always passed with room to spare in previous years...even when I had the leaky head gasket and other issues... :(

Not so fast, grasshopper! If you had put "permanent" or "long term" in front of liquid, I would wholeheartedly agree. But,

A bottle of 70% isopropyl alcohol added to a half tank has been known to significantly lower emissions to the point where many state emission tests can be passed. I know, I've done it. Granted mine was NO2 related.

Repeat: there are no long term (liquid) solutions to mechanical problems.

But there are a couple of inexpensive short term fixes.

I used it last year. It absolutely worked for me. You run a run a tank with it and then fill up and take the test again. Accordingly, it has nothing to do with oxygenating the fuel. My 260e flunked both hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. After using it, both were zero.

Used what? The alcohol or the GTP?

How does it do that? (I suppose the 91% solutions now commonly available in stores would work even better?)

Educaid 05-05-2008 03:17 PM

I used Guaranteed to Pass.

Jim B. 05-05-2008 04:49 PM

Yep. Denatured alcohol should do it.
