Old member returns with a new car, and questions.
Hey guys, it's been a few years since I've been here due to the fact that I defected and went to the Jaguar camp. Well I still have the Jag but just picked up a (new to me) 1991 420SEL. I think I got a pretty good deal on it and have some questions.
First details: 1991 420SEL, black/gray, 137,000, 2 owners, clean carfax, clean interior and good paint but no records. Of course it needs a serious detail job. Bought it from a repair shop that was going to replace the fuel distributor but it was never finished. It's been sitting about a year but the mechanic said it's in pretty good mechanical shape and he would charge $200 to install a new fuel distributor that I would supply. Found a few on eBay for around $200, unless anyone here has one they want to sell. So here are they numbers: Paid $900 for the car, $200 for the part and $200 for the labor. $1300 total. I know it risky buying a car that's not running but the numbers seemed to work, at least I think so. What do you guys think? Also, since it hasn't been run in a year and it's going to be worked on before I even start the car, should I do anything while it's at the shop? I was planning on having him install new plugs, wires and fuel filter. Anything else you guys think I should do? It's good to be back in the Mercedes camp.:) |
Have him check out the front suspension. Look for oil leaks too.

Also recommend checking the flex discs on the drive shaft.

guide rails
Most importantly , check the timing chain guide rails, and you could replace the fuel distributor yourself , it's really easy , these are great cars , I have owned mine for 8 years.. good luck and welcome back..
