Noisy Fuel Pump
When I got home today I could hear my fuel pump whinning. It was pretty hot today, just over 100, but its been that way for a couple of days. Is it on its last gallon and should I buy a new pump now or maybe its just feeling the heat. I just checked the parts shop and it said 2 per car, is that true (double ouch) ? I'm going to check the CD but I wanted to post this first and hope I get a good answer and sleep tonight.

Your car should have two. I would get them replaced soon. When they start to fail, they will burn up a fuel pump relay quickly!

Define "soon". When you say "them" do you really mean both, double, two? Do they both die at once? Could it be just one is heading south by itself, maybe, hopefully? And why are there two?

It just sounds like an electric motor. I should have said "noiser". Or said I didn't used to be able to hear it much, now I can obviously hear it. It sounds different, like the sound of money going away, checking balance dropping, a little like the stock market lately. Its taken a new and different heading, south.

why 2 pumps? so they can sell you 2 units at the same time!
makes business sense, don't you think? why change both the defective one and the good one? well, it makes a lot of sense. how far away is your good one from being bad? it's a psychic game! and guess who is winning? MB, is the clear winner, you got that right, buddy! |

The fuel pump relays are pretty resilient when the pumps start to go, I estimate mine lasted almost 2 years, but it will go eventually and then you have an extra expense to worry about
The fuel pump hums but when it starts to buzz it's usually on its way out, you do not want to end up stuck some where when the sucker gives up. |

I realize an ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure, I realized that when my ignition started acting up ($70 v $700 or so, I believe was the ratio). This morning the pump was quiet so it may be temperature related and with cooler weather forcast I may have been granted a reprieve.
But I'm still wondering why there two pumps. Are they the same? If one dies would the other one keep the car running? At least they are easy to change, I've heard the submersable ones inside the fuel tank are very expensive to replace. Thats another vote for Mercedes for designing a maintainable car |

it might be related, but when i changed by fuel filter
to fix another problem, my fuel pump sounded back to its normal hissing sound. |

There are two pumps in order to do the following:
Pump #1 feeds Pump#2; Pump #2 builds the pressure for the CIS system. A used set of pumps costs about $115. I got mine from SilverStar Recycling in Rancho Cordova, CA, and I got a "lifetime guarantee" of more used fuel-pumps. I got mine from a low-mileage (45K) 1995 W124 wagon. Good luck, :-) neil |
