Minor issue with 500sl, possibly fuel related?
My 500sl died twice on me this evening. I was pulling into my neighborhood, hit a small bump, then dead. After some cranking, she started right up, only to die again in a short distance. The third try she started immediately and drove all the way home like normal. I let her idle in the garage for 5 minutes, no problem.
Things I noticed had changed: My economy gauge is on the extreme left side, and will not go past the middle mark when the engine is revved. My idle is very low, about 500rpm. Both times the car died when I let off the gas pedal. Any ideas? |

Assuming from you avatar, you have a R107. Cutout issue sounds like a faulty fuel pump relay. Isn't full left max vacuum? Another possibility is a bad fuel pressure regulator, are you seeing lots of black smoke? The overvoltage (OVP) protection relay has a blade fuse on the top of it, check tosee if it is blown, this can cause a faulty idle. Jim |
I just had amost the exact same symtoms on an 83 380 sel. At one stop light it was fine, at the next it would not idle. RPM's would drop to below 500, with black smoke, and it would stall. It would restart instantly and run at speed, though with reduced power.
The solution was a $18.00 Bosch universal O2 sensor. As soon as it was in place the car went back to runing and idling perfectly. |
If you are saying that your vacuum seems low, look for vacuum leaks, especially broken lines, bad connectors. Check the functioning of the EGR valve if the car has one.
You may have a problem with idle control relay or idle air valve. |
No smoke, and the vacuum gauge has went back to normal this morning. The car drove normally. Gremlin?:D
