lifter noise

slight lifter noise on the right cylinder bank (click click click click sound, very slight). one mechanic suggested going to a 20W 50 weight synthetic oil. can a mechanic adjust the lifter to eliminate the noise or would the heavier weight oil be a better choice?

Do we assume you are talking about a Benz?

It really would help to know the color.

My instinct tells me an M117 motor. If that is the case, check the cam, and if it is good, replace the lifters - they're not that expensive.

when checking another repair web site, it mentions that mercedes offers various size shims for the lifters. would properly shimming the noisy lifter fix the click click clicking sound?

I wouldn't think so

I think the shim is put in at assembly to make the fit correct. The lifters are all the same size or length. I think if the oil change does not correct it, it will need a new lifter.

I know this is an OLD thread, but I am having the same problem with mine, and would like to change out my noisy lifter!

Can anyone direct me to a DIY page that talks about how to do this? Or maybe walk me through it on here? What tools will I need? Thanks!

I'd try the full synthetic oil first (make sure it's a full syn - most oils labeled as such aren't). It's cured lifter tick on many a make & model of vehicle.

Unless stated otherwise, any question I ask is about my greymarket 1985 380SEL.

Tried synthetic oil...make the tick better and less frequent, but it's still there. :[

DO I need any special tools to remove and replace just the lifter that is noisy? Do I need a valve spring compressor for this job? Would be really nice to know what I'm up against since I don't have a repair manual...Thanks!

Took it upon myself to figure out what I needed and to do the repair. I borrowed a spring compressor from my local MB Specialist, and grabbed a few HLC's and rocker arms from the junkyard.

Removal of the old HLC's was very straightforward and easy. Just compress the spring, which takes pressure off of the rocker arm, which then allows it to be removed, then unscrew the HLC from the head with a 24mm socket.

I found one of my HLC's completely destroyed! (the noisy one) The collar that holds it together was damaged and just sitting in place, and it's internal spring popped it open when I compressed the valve spring. It fell apart into three pieces when I removed it. It was pretty obvious which one was bad! I'd also like to note for the rest of you DIY guys that a LOT of sludge can build up underneath the HLC's. My destroyed HLC was almost completely full of sludge! I will get pics of it for you guys to see tomorrow. I was shocked. I proceeded to remove all of my HLC's, inspect the rocker arms for damage, and clean the sludge out.

My car is completely tap-free now, and it idles MUCH more smoothly!!

Change your oil, people!!

Great! A successful operation. Elsewhere in the forums there is a strong support for using Diesel engine oil Chevron Delo ,Rotella etc in the 103 engine to keep its operational wear tear down due to the high Zinc content in the diesel engine.
