A/C question

Ok, I am new to this forum and this has probably been discussed before but a search didn't help...

I have a 1993 300E. How can I find out what type of refrigerant was used? was it R-12 or the newer kind? A google search only leads me to stores that are trying to sell me a new compressor.

Thanks. This is my first MB and it's all new to me.

There should be a sticker under your hood that gives the quantity and type of refrigerant used. On my W126, its right infront of the radiator on the upper cross member.

found it!

It is the newer type according to the owner's manual. Surprising what one can find when he looks!
