W124 300TE transmission differences
Does anyone understand the differences between transmissions that have been fitted to the same series cars. Specifically I would like to know if transmission model 722.342 is the same as 722.322 or 722.346. And, is a 300E transmission interchangable into a 300TE (that was 4matic but is becoming "2matic")

Bump. Anyone? Can a gas transmission fit the diesels? Are all W124 trannies compatible?

I can't tell you the specific differences between the XX in 722.3XX transmissions, but all 124-installed 722.3xx transmissions are "interchangeable". However:
There are different gear ratios (although AFAIK all are 1:1 4th gear) There are different stall speeds There are different shift-points And very noticable; only the diesels and M104 cars had 1st-gear start, the others start in 2nd gear unless you select low or floor it. Of course that means the '87 diesel (OM603) as the later diesels have the weaker 722.4xx transmission with the 5cylinder engine (not sure on the '95 though). Biggest difference you'll see if you use a 300E transmission on a diesel is the higher stall speed and 2nd-gear start being a real buzz-kill on take off.

the diesel to gas switch is a reach. More than likely the valve body changes the shift point entirely.
A less obvious change is between different year 300 models. I discovered the hard way (after I installed the unit), that my replacement transmission had a different output flange diameter from the original. That's an easy fix if you have both on hand. There's a big nut that has to be removed on the back. A new nut must be used. Also, there's a seal and a small thrust washer. The hard part is finding the right 29mm socket for the job. If you have both units out of the car, a quick trip to a NAPA (or other worldpack vendor) will get you the flange nut and seal. A trip to transmission shop and 10$ cash should get the old nuts removed so that you can do the tailshaft swap. -CTH |

The OP wasn't referencing diesel engines.
He wanted to know whether or not a gas sedan tranny will go into a gas wagon. 300E to 300TE Farmy, ring John Green or Murray at OZBenz 1300787300 and ask there opinion. I put a low K 190e2.6 tranny into my W124 260e - got it from them. 260e and 300e trannys have slightly different internals to each other. - at least they do in Oz. |
