vibration from engin or gearbox?

Hi,

Got a problem I need some help on. My 1999 C280 developed a vibration a few months ago (maybe even a year) which has become progressively worse over time. Symptons as follow:

With the gear lever in Park or Reverse, there is no or very little vibrtion. In Drive with engine running, but stationary, the whole car has a vibration. As soon as I start to take of the vibration disappears. When the car is really warmed-up after a long drive, it will still have a slight vibration when stationary and in Drive, but much less than when it was cold.

What is most likely? Gearbox mountings, engine mountings, or something else??

Regards
Leon

Leon,

I think the way you would detect if it were a transmission or engine mount issue is to use a floor jack carefully to take pressure off the component, engine or trans mount and then put car in drive (stationary) and see if vibration is reduced. Even engine mounts can be measured to see if they are collapsed - must be some post on this if you use the SEARCH.

How many miles are o your car?

Also I would inspect shocks and drveshaft flex-disc, doubt flex-disc - but always inspect the easy things first.

I have about 230 000 km on the clock.

Is replacement of the mounts a DIY job? Is there any DIY directions on how to do on C280 with V6 motor. Found directions on the straight 6 (M104) but apparently V6 is more tricky.

Also, I can get "replacement" (pirate) mounts for about 1/3 of the price. Are the mercedes ones that much better. Are the mounts for the M104 and m112 the same part - that whats the "pirate" catalog says.

Depends on your skill level if you can change engine mounts, I like to raise the engine with a hoist as opposed to a floor jack/block of wood on the sump. Components like engine mounts I go OEM, they are too bothersome to replace if they fail.

You can't really guess which component is most llikely to cause the vibration.
Inspection of the rubber on the mounts is the first step, and since they are hydraulic check to see if there is seepage.

HAVE YOU CHECKED THE RUBBER ON YOU ENGINE CRANKSHAFT HARMONIC BALANCER ?

I think an experienced mechanic can look and have a good idea from visually checking if a mount is bad.
Hopefully a mercedes tech on this forum can guide you better then me.
