PREVENTIVE REPLACEMENT OF timing chain for M-104

When do I need to replace the timing chain of 1997 E320 W210 engine in line 6 M104? current milage ~65,000 miles. Thanks

Agree. Not for a long, long time. NOt sure the 210 even has a recommended interval. Maybe one of the shop guys can help. I'd say inspect it at 120,000?

wouldn't the UAE have different maintenance intervals then the U.S.?

but 65K miles does seem a but low, but 100Kmiles may be about right.

Higher temps, higher speeds?, and increased dust, would those effect a timing chain lifespan?

khooper, you must be thinking of something else. It's inconceivable for the M104 timing chain to be changed once a year as a matter of routine. I wouldn't even begin to show concern until 120~150K.

Yeah, might as well replace the pistons too. :)

But seriously, the M104 doesn't share the timing chain issues of some earlier MB engines, so at 65K I wouldn't even consider replacing it. Now, if I was doing a head gasket/valve job on a high mileage M104, I might consider replacing the chain just for insurance purposes, only because it doesn't cost much, and it's an easy job when the cylinder head is removed.
