Anyone know what service is supposed to be done on a 190E 2.3 at 105,000 miles? I have 98,000+ on my car but I have never had a tune up. Last month I did eplace the serpentine belt and the entire tensioner system. Other than that I have all Iv'e had to do is change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. I am not having any problems but I was told that there is a special service need at this milage. I don't have a required service manuel. The reason for my question is this: For this service should I have a dealer do it as most of my service is done by a trusted mechanic whom I have used for fifteen years. Just wondering if MB would do something a regular guy wouldn't know about. If you knw what needs doing I would appreciate a post so I can go for service with a hard copy. Also would like to know where to get the seat foam and horse hair to redo the drivers seat. Any help appreciated. Thank you!:

With the 190E's, they're notoriously known to have weak valve seals/guides, and they do go out about a little past the 150k mark ( depending on condition). At 105k, the timing chain should be looked at. Avoiding this will cause lots of havoc later on, although I know a guy who has 275k+ miles on his car and never changed the timing belt once.

The OVP relay can act up also. Other than that, the 190E's are pretty solid, due to my experience. Do a search in here, and you shall find a few cases of the car stalling and/or having a hard time starting up.

I think what Dorsey is looking for is the necessary preventive maintenance. This can be found in an owners manual or Haynes manual, also the CD is a worthwhile investment.

Such things as valve seals are something you do when the condition of the engine warrants it. Rather than replace the timing chain as a preventive maintenance measure, it would be worthwhile to check the timing chain stretch. If there is no stretch, you shouldn't have to worry about it. If the car has had frequent oil changes, the chain is probably not stretched. If the timing chain horror stories that you read here give you nightmares, it would be worth replacing it any way, so that you can sleep at night.

Unless your trusted mechanic has done and recorded the typical maintance, its basically a all fluids change:

Oil & filter
Brake fluid (bleed)
Transmission fluid
Differential fluid
Power steering fluid
Radiator fluid, I mean coolant
Lube doors, locks, latches, throttle linkage.
Air filter

Somewhere on this site I heard of someone performing the Mercedes maintance on a non-mercedes and having the car last as long.

Hi and thanks everyone for your input. I am not having any problems with my engine now but I was told I would need this major check up at 105,000 miles that what I was checking on. As far as the tensioneris concerned, I changed the complete system because my mechanic said that shock was damaged and there was no more adjustment left. All I needed was the shock but I opted to do the whole thing at once and get it over with. I took it in because there was a kind of banging/rattling noise everytime I stopped at a light. Prior to getting the work done anything major, I get two opinions even if I trust the first one, you never know) I went to a foreign car specialist that gives free estimates just to verify that was the problem. It was the problem and they wanted $ 700 bucksincluding parts!! I purchased the Serpentine belt, the shock and the complete Tensioner kit for $ 235 dollars. My mechanic did the install for $ 150 so my total was $ 385. Mercedes wanted$ 400 dollars without the shock!! They are insane!! Hope this helps. I still have one unanswered question, for this service should I go berserk and let Mercedes this service. I don't think any major service has been done other than oil and filter by the previous owner. May MB would do a better job in this instance because they would be looking for specific things as it is one of theirs. Any help, thank you again!!

Dorsey , to answer your question the 105k service consists of changing oil and filter , spark plugs and a basic check over. Your next major service is due at 120k miles . Easy way to remember is at 3k miles you change your oil and filter. Every 15k miles you change your oil and filter and replace spark plugs. Every 30k miles you flush the brake fluid and coolant , replace air filter , fuel filter and spark plugs. Service transmission . Replace rear differental gear oil, rotate and balance tires . Also have your mixture and timing checked and adjusted. this si about a 500.00 service if brought to a shop. You might be able to do some yourself. Hope I could help.

Although I do not have any experience with a 190E but I believe that the front wheel bearings should be cleaned and repacked.

Hello and thanks for the advise on the wheel bearings, I never thought of that. I beleive that I should also get grease fitting put on so that the wheels can be lubed at each oil change. Althought he closed system has held up for fifteen years+. I can't imagine that those occassional groans upon making a turn aren't the front end begging to be lubed!! Have a good day!!

Those groans are probably worn/dry/cracked rubber bushings.
