Hello all:
My wife's 92 300-E stright 6 cylinder W124-030 has been driven a bit with out an oil and filter change milage is 39,000.. This afternoon I used a extractor to extract the engine oil I had been using RED Line multi grade. I went to tight in stead of loosen the oil filter , till I realized what I was doing and reversed the the proper left turn to loosen the old filter . I did not know but when I tighten the old filter I must of caused The old oil filter rubber seal out with out me knowing. The short end of the story is I caught the mistake after running the engine to rewarm up and check the oil level, nice puddle on the ground gave me a hint something is wrong. I looked down and saw the extra seal and removed the new oil filter and extracted the seal. Then put back thee new oil filter I use KNECHT OC 110 and refilled to proper level. I am using AMS OIL 0/W30 My question is my oil preasure drops to just a little below 2 when at idel and then the needle swing back up to the top when the car is in motion. Did I do any damage, I caught the problem before road testing no oil leaks after? weather was hot 80 degrees F. What is the feeling on AMS oil synthic? Thank You Bob Geco |

The action of the gauge is normal as you described. You did no harm.

You did good
But anytime you work with oil change and filters, it is really a good idea when finished to run it up, watch the gauge and make sure pressure is up, but then to also check around and below the engine for oil running out. That is not the first time it has happened. Also remember when taking a threaded item loose, loose is always counterclockwise, (ccw) and if occasionally you run into an exception to that, it usually will be noted on the item, like "turn this way to remove". Those Mercedes 300E engines really like that synthetic oil. I just changed mine to Mobil 1, and I can feel the difference.

+1 on the Mobil 1. I changed our 300E over to Mobil 1 0W-40 at 135k miles after a head rebuild, and the car l-o-v-e-s the synthetic.

Or is it the oil and filter change mileage that's 39k? Without punctuation it's hard to say.
