W126 oil Pan Gasket advice
I want to change the oil pan and oil sump gasket on my 86 420 SEL, does anybody have any advice on how to do this and what obstacles I will face... cross member or sensors. Oh need torque settings too.

i've read here about loosening the A/C brackets before doing the lower oil pan gasket. Let is know how it goes because I need to do this soon on my 420SEL.

Hi there,
I did the oil pan gasket and my torque wrench hadn't been calibrated for a long time. So I "overtorqued" the 8 ftlbs or 11 NM. You then also bend the oil pan edge. I have now a torque wrench that lets me do inchlbs. They are easily overtorqued. If memory serves me right, some cooler lines are connected to the bolds that hold the oil pan on the driver side. I couldn't find a better picture, but this one shows some connection and a spacer. You will see it once you look at it closely. Good luck

I just did the upper and lower gaskets, as well as replacing the sump pan.
For the upper gasket, I would suggest doing it with the engine out of the car, and probably upside down on an engine stand... It's a pain in the rear getting to some of those bolts along the forward edge, and near the front, just above the sump. That being said, if you pull the crank pulley, it's a great time to replace the front main seal, and makes it much easier to get to those bolts. I've heard someone else talk about taking the pan off while the engine was still in the car, and seem to remember that they lifted it away from the cross member to get clearance to drop the pan down and out. I question how feasible it is, just due to how far down through the oil pan and into the sump the oil pickup extends. Best of luck with this, whichever way you choose to go.

excellent
I might just stick with the sump gasket for now, If i pull the engine out then I will redo everything. I love this car, I have driven never cars and they are borrrrrring!! I am repainting it and getting new wheels... it will look like that black PANZR W126.
