Motor & Trany Questions

i want to put a late 70s Mercedes 300 motor in my 75 Dodge 4x4 truck if this is possible. i want to put either a 4 or 5 speed manual trans behind it. What trans should i use? Primary use will be off road, mild 4wheeling
Thanks, Jim

It depends on the transmission that you have in your truck. If its integrated with the transfer case you probably need to use that tranny. If its an automatic tranny then you probably will want a manual that is compatible with your truck. If the transfer case is completely separate you may be able to use a mercedes tranny. My preference would be a manual tranny. The four speed that comes in a 240d would probably work just fine.

Someone else here probably has the first hand knowledge of your truck and can say more definitively what you need.

I had thought about a trany out of a 240D but thought it would be geared to high for my application. this truck weighs in around 7k lbs. Whay i need to know is What manual trans will fit the 300D motor and still move my truck????
thanks, Jim

Unless you find a tranny from a big mercedes van or bus the 240d tranny is about the only choice.

Moving the truck it seems to me can be adusted by your choice of rear end.

unsure if this information will help. other day I was behind a new Dodge pick up. on the back was a plaque that read "BlueTec". a friend of mine who is in the transmission business informed me that many of the new Chrysler products, i.e. Jeep Cherokee, etc are being switched to Mercedes Benz transmissions. If Chrsyler is putting Mercedes BlueTec Diesels into their new pick ups, you might want to check out that possibility. Of course, it will come with the famous three times the normal price Mercedes sticker shock........
