How to use a remote starter switch? 560SL

I know this sounds stupid, but I'm not sure how to use my remote switch to crank the engine over without starting. I'm getting ready to replace a lifter, so I want to be able to get the cam lobe pointing up or down, and I don't want to remove the fan to use the socket-on-crankbolt-turn-by-hand method.
I checked the shop manual for the instructions on starter jumpering and disconnecting the fuel pump relay, but the connector and terminals shown don't match the ones on my car.
So, I was going to connect one end of the remote switch to the small terminal on the starter solenoid, and the other to the 12V + connector box under the hood (or the big connector on the starter). I will unplug and ground the high tension coil lead from the distributor (no voltage to plugs), and leave the fuel pumps alone I guess, since I don't know how to unplug the relay.
Do I leave the ignition 'off' during this cranking, or leave it in the 'on' or 'run' position? My remote switch instructions say to leave the ignition 'on'.
Is this the right way to turn the motor over using the starter?

If you bring 12v pos+ to solinoid start terminal, you do not have to have the key on.....but , there is an ignition ballast bypass , so make sure the coil wire is off the distributor. Also, make sure you are in P or N...
