Sure sounds like a fuse problem. Very little connection between gauges and the car starting. It also could just be a dead battery caused by a failing alternator.

Do the headlights stay bright when you try to crank it?

If you should follow Steve's and Arthur's advice, and check the fuses - check them closely - a nearly invisible hairline crack, left me in the exact same predicament.

(after checking the battery, doing the headlight test, and trying to start in N vs. P, I checked the fuses, and voila! that's all it was)
Good thing too...I was out on a date

The reason I said to just go and Change fuse 5 is b/c we see this all the time..the fuse looks fine, but the ends do not conduct ..and if that fuse circuit is open , the K38 Starter Interlock Relay does not allow starter activation..fitting your common complaint on that chassis.
So, change it , regardless of how you think it looks ...just to get that common problem off the table.

If the viscous fan clutch is good, and the low speed fan does NOT come on, I would suspect that one of the wires to the resistor has burned off. (naturally, I would check any fuses first, and then verify that the fan works to begin with).
There are probably other things to check - but - I mention the resistor, because it has happened to me 3 or 4 times in the last 5 years, and I'm not the only one it has happened too.

Low speed and High speed?
The lows are fairly quiet - the highs are noticable from at least 10-15 feet away.
