Unhappy Help new MB owner, very confused

Dear pros

I just bought a 1986 300D (no turbo), 162K mi. I have noticed a little bit of blueish smoke whenever I start it every morning and while it is idle (ex. waiting for green light). Compared to my 84 190D, 2.2 4-matic and a Gas Ford Contour 2.0 I believe there is no power loss (first MB of this kind so that's why I´m not so sure about power). No coolant in oil and I don´t feel a major oil consumption, not sure too because I just bought it.

I can also hear a clanky sound... greater while idle too. I am pretty confused and since I live in Nicaragua, it's kind of hard to get real experts around hear.

Before any major job I would like to be completly sure of what I must do, since here I have two different opinions 1.- injectors, 2.- piston rings, but it is kind of hard for me to believe.

Please HELP., I love this car a childs dream came true

My 1982 300D does the same thing as far as the light blue smoke at startup. Not much at idle.

If you are not used to diesel cars, then the Mercedes does make a sound like clanking at idle that is louder than what you might be used to.

It's hard to answer your question without knowing just how much smoke and clanking there is - but I plan to drive mine just like it is for a long time unless it gets MUCH worse.

Another possible cause: valve stem seals

308,000 miles here so far.

Thanks for your advice.

It's just a lit bit of smoke at idle that vanishes and a LOT MORE (cloudy and thick) when cold start up.

I just bought this car so defenitly I'm not used to it, but I used to own a 190D '84 and the clanking sound wasn't as loud as in this engine.

Hard to diagnose from here but bad injector(s) will give a bad diesel knock and give lots of blueinsh smoke when cold and at idle. I would do the injectors before I got to worried. And before all that run some fuel conditioner through it for a while before anything else.
