Another solution...

My 16V did that when I first bought it. A week after I bought it, I installed my 12" sub. Hasn't flickered since

Later,

dancing fuel guage

i had the same experience on my 1989 300E, and thought it was my fuel tank sender unit.

i went to a german vdo specialist, and he told me that 90% of the time it's due to cold solder joints. in other words, remove the fuel tank guage (in the instrument cluster) and resolder the solder joints. it worked on my unit.

later,
andy

Sounds too simple but a dirty fuse will also cause erratic movement in the instrument cluster.Clean with contact cleaner and replace fuse.

To JOHNSC16V, to answer your question, No that is not me.

A dirty fuel sender was my problem. The guage did its dance routine at about 1/3 full to 1/8 full. Never if there was more than a 1/3 of a tank of gas. Happened every time, without fail. And only when the fuel was sloshing around inside the tank. Sitting still - no problem.

However, I too have experienced bad connections on the printed circuit boards inside the instrument cluster. So it is very likely that your problem could be there. My solder problem was related to the instrument lights.
