85 E300 headliner repair

I almost never ride with the windows open but my daughter took a ride with me and insisted on opening the sunroof and all the windows. A short time after this I noticed the headliner material hanging down in the middle of the roof. It was realy bothering me so I have removed the pannel and peeled back the side to reveal the area where it seperated. The foam padding is torn in places and it looks very crumbly in others.

Can I repair it with spray glue? Is it worth it, or can I buy one from MB with out spending a fortune. Is this best left to profesionals to fix and put back in the car? The attachments around the sunroof look imposible to put back tightly?

Spray glue will NOT work...believe me, I've tried!

The foam backing chemically breaks down due to heat...turns into that hard crusty stuff that you've witnessed.

The only cure is replacement. Mine sagged years ago, and i'm living with it until I get other more important stuff dealt with.

Any one have an idea on the cost of a replacement? Should I just leave it to a pro?

I was quoted $250 or so for the kit, not including installation.

All sorts of interior panels to be removed in order to do the job...especially the large C-pillar panels by the rear window.

I can see myself busting up stuff trying to do it myself! I would spend another $200 to have a pro do it.

Well I did take it down and spray glued it back. It came out passable but not up to the standard of the rest of the car, not smooth but lumpy. I guess I will have to spring for a new one. I agree, the work to remove and then reinstall the piece is not worth it. The replacement will be put in by pros.
