Question VOM for duty cycle on 300e electronics.

I need to check some stuff out on my car, 86 300E, and I am in need of a VOM that measures duty cycle. I have been wanting a better meter anyway than my old analog VOM. Any recomendations? I have always been partial to Fluke instruments, but will consider any if the price is right.

I would suggest a Fluke 87 series 3 such as follows:

Should take care of the majority of your testing needs.

Sears has an LCD digital multimeter with Duty Cycle scale for $29.95. I bought one and it's great. I've used DVM's for almost 30 years and this one is not bad at all. It's amazing for $30.

Good luck,

I too have recently purchased a Fluke 87 on ebay for $130. It joins my 88, 865, and my 98.

Its hard to make a case against those $30 dollar meters though. I bought the 87 to be used where I used to use a cheap micronta (radio shack). I think we drove over it or hung it in a fan one to many times, as the most important digit in its displayed wigged out. I had it hard wired as a ammeter breakout for EHA and Idle speed current testing. The old meter can be seen in figure#5 in my DIY article on "Evaluating Engine Copntrols" along with a Bosch KDJE-P600 the tool of the era for testing lambda intergrator, fault codes and frquency valve duty-cycles. A Fluke 87 will do the functions of both tools.

Meter thoughts...

Hi there,
I agree with Steve that the $30 meters aren't a bad deal for automotive work. I have a terrific Fluke 8060A, a top of the line 4 1/2 digit meter, but actually prefer to use my old Radio Shack Micronta for automotive work, as it's less sensitive to the high frequency "noise" that one finds everywhere under the hood. Also, if I should pull a Stevebfl trick and run over it, I wouldn't feel nearly as bad as if I destroyed my 8060A. There are plenty of meters available for under $50 that have excellent features and good accuracy. I would look for one with STANDARD lead sockets, so you can buy some high quality meter leads.
Good luck!

Stevebfl has mentioned that a 'duty-cycle' meter will do what you want. Finally got a chance to check out what Fluke has to offer. Need one myself. Of course, I'm sure that there are others probably cheaper!

The site most used and recommended on the iATN tech site is www.aeswave.com . New stuff is always more money but I have bought many accesories from them and they have good prices and good technical help. The owner Jorge Menchu is a highly sought trainer for automotive electrical and scope diagnostic theory. Check out the site as it has lots of good info.

One nice thing about the site is they have many different brands.

Dwell Meter

Brother of The Benz, Ron Miller
It's amazing how many things there are to do a task.
There are meters and there are meters.
To adjust the idle speed, mixrture settings and to see the O2 sensor duty cycle, I reference the W124030 Engine Shop Manual and use a DWELL METER.
The one I have is a Radio Shack unit, CHEAP.
But if I had it to do over, and I needed a new VOM, it would be the Sears unit.

Larry and Donald, would you happen to have a model number of the meter (vom) that you have or wish you had? I sorta looked at Sears website, but only found expensive meters that did duty cycle, not a $30 one so far.

I gotta do some of this stuff myself, because the closest Mercedes dealer is about 210 miles from me. Heck, even a Sears is over 90 miles away.

I thank you all for the help and suggestions you give to all of us.

It's From Sears Too!

Brother of The Benz, Ron Miller
Sorry for the error.
My Tach/Dwell/Voltmeter Mdl. 92165 is from Sears too.
It has a 5" Meter with a 90 degree sweep.
I don't recall the price, but it was cheap.
Adjusting the Lmbda is simple with this meter.

Ron Miller,

If you pick up the latest Sears Tool catalog, there is a table with the functions checked off. Look in the duty cycle column or row, I don't remember which, and look for the cheapest one with the duty cycle function. If you can't get a catalog for some reason, email me, and I'll look up the number for you.

Donald is correct, if you have an old dwell meter, you can use it for this purpose. Dwell is merely duty cycle measured in degrees of rotation. The middle of the scale is 50% duty cycle. I actually used a 30 year old dwell meter for my lambda adjustment, then didn't trust it and spent the $30 bucks for the Sears DVM. I put it on and it agreed with the cheap, 30 year old dwell meter.

Good luck,

Donald,

You need to team up with Norm Abram. You do the auto repair dollar savers and he does the New Yankee wood working dollar savers.

Your site is nice.

Have a great day,
