Standing Lights
Ae the standing lights supposed to work on a U.S. spec care. They have never worked on my 83 300d turbo. If so what would be some probable causes?

Yes, they should work.
Are you sure you are using them properly? They won't work with the key in the ON position or if the engine is started.

Welllll now that could be. I have always told my guys in the shop that you have to be smarter than the equipment that your working on. Seriously, how would I operate them? I have not tried them in a long time, and do not remember if I tried them with or without the engine on or the ignition on. So if you could, please educate me.

Are standing lights the same thing as parking lights?
On my '82 300D, the full array of parking lights (one click to the right on the rotary switch) will work only with the ignition switch on. However, you can turn on one side at a time without the ignition switch using the switch positions to the left. Really freaks people out - they always think you've got bulbs burned out in the car. One click to the left turns on the right side, and the second click over to the left turns on the left side parking lights. This feature cuts the electrical consumption in half while in most cases providing the necessary safety lighting. I usually fuel the car in the early morning on the way to work while its still dark. I ALWAYS leave on one side of the parking lights while fueling and paying inside. I hope it helps people see the car better when pulling into the station half awake! Ken |

Ken's description of how the standing lights (one or two clicks to the left) operate, however, on my 300E, the parking lights (one click to the right) will operate irrespective of whether or not the ignition is "on". The key to the standing lights is for the ignition to be "off".

Follow-Up Info
Yes, esm6869 is right. The full array of parking lights will operate whether the ignition switch is on or off. On my car, with the ignition off and the full array of parkings lights on (one click to the right on the rotary switch) the buzzer also sounds.
The "lights-one-side-only" (two) positions to the left on the rotary switch only work when the ignition is off. I guess that prevents you from driving down the street that way! |
