Mercedes transmissions

I am an owner of two Mercedes' that I dearly love. One is a 1996 C280 with 196,000 miles, the other is a 2001 E430 with 92,000. Each was purchased used. I noticed after a few months, 6 would be a round figure on the length, that each shifter became heavy and clunky after moving smoothly and quietly. My question is what, if any thing, is wrong? Is this something that demands my immediate attention? If so, could you give me approximate cost and possible parts needed?
Your diagnosis is greatly respected and valued.
Thanks

Under the car on the shift linkage there are "rubber" bushings. Most likely you have a failure of 1 of those bushings.
