1995 e320 sunroof acting up.
Yeah i just bought this e320 from a one time owner and whenever i open or go to close the sunroof in it, it makes this awful screeching noise. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve the noise issue? Is there something i need to replace or clean?
thank you. Troy Last edited by TBangin23; 07-30-2008 at 04:14 PM. Reason: grammar |

Welcome
Sunroof actually slides on little rubber/felt "Feet" that are lubricated by a
Mysterious substance "Gleitepaste"...Unlubed the felt wears away, along with the rubber. Then the arms drag on the Stain-less "Rails". Or Might be the angle lifts broken Or might be dry cable. SunRoofs are looked upon as VooDoo by many Owners and some Techs... With good reason...unprepared and/or not-very-expert...These things can "Drag You Down to the Vault" like some Nasty Old Alligator. So what your saying to do is? Just grease up the rubber parts and see if that does anything? And if not maybe i should take it to my local dealer for there input?

I just cleaned up the rails, i got a bunch of "crap" off of them. and i had my friend sit in the car and close the sunroof and open (it only makes the noise when i'm opening it,sliding it back and you don't let go of the button right away when the sunroof itself acutally stops, or when you go to tilt the sunroof up while opening it, thats when it does it the most. But then while closing it it doesn't make the noise at all.) it while i sat in the trunk to see if it was the motor making the noise and it was. Does that mean i have to spend the $450 on a new one or does it need to be tightened or something? I'm praying i won't have to buy a new one. Please help.

Possible causes of motor noise
1.lack of lube on sunroof cable.(Too much DRAG for the motor)
2.Lack of Glietepaste on the rails and "Feet". (again too much DRAG) 3.Friction adjustment for the motor is too tight. 4. ? 5. ? 6. ? What I am saying is that you need to study the diagrams and research past repairs (By other members) so that you may either diagnose the problem yourself or be able to explain the symptoms to some of the experts here. 1.Do not attempt half-assed repairs on Mercedes. (It will come back to bite you) Know what you are doing,AND why BEFORE you make any attempts at repair. 1a.Especially,don't try them on Sunroofs... (Dealer "RePairs" no matter how simple average $1,000.00 USD) That said ...What, pray tell, did you use to "Clean" the rails? There is a very specific cleaning agent used...All of this is tied into the lubricant ,"Glietepaste", Which is designed to NOT attract dust and dirt (Dust and Dirt would then act as a Sandpaper, GRIT, like substance shortening the life of the "Feet" and scarring the SS rails.) You have some homework ahead IF you're gonna try to fix this yourself... Go to GSXR's "Website" and look at some of the info there. The fact that your sunroof lube looked like "A bunch of Crap" tells us that it has not been serviced in a long time...God only knows what the lube in the "Tube" that carries the cable looks like! The Roof may just need lubed parts cleaned and re-lubed. There are plastic parts that can SNAP when subjected to too much stress from lack of lube (Or Old Age Stress). EXAMPLE:

i had not used any cleaning agent on the rails. i just simply took like a paper towel and just cleaned off the dirt. I didn't do any "heavy duty" cleaning. But i'll take a look at the stuff you sent me and try and figure out whats going on..
Thanks again. |
