Dumb New Guy with 1980 500SE
I just got my first Benz, a 1980 500SE (euro). The transmission is toast but the engine runs real nice. I have a replacement transmission on the way and I was wondering about any special problems that I might run into installing the replacement.

just make sure you have some good extensions to reach and tighten some of the transmission bolts. Some of those are hard to reach.

Might also be a good time to replace bushings from your shifter to transmission... They're cheap and may keep ya from crawling under there again, later...

Thanks for mentioning the bushings! Now I have a new problem I went out to listen to the tranny grind and it won't crank. The pump buzzes but not even a click from the starter!!

Not sure if Neutral Safety Switch controls the fuel pump as well.. NSS could be temporarily jumped to check that out.. With extreme caution... they are there for a purpose... |
