Check the shifter bushing. Is found beneath the car connecting shifter to linkage.

Terry, does the gear shift lever feel sloppy when you also get the rattling noise? or can you get the noise before the lever feels sloppy.

A bad shifter bushing can cause some slop in addition to rattles.

Its a very hard (green?) rubber material. Cheap and relatively easy to replace once the belly pan is off.

Hello, I'm getting the same noise from the shift lever in my 99 E300., I noticed it last night, and it starts at around 1800 rpm, and stops at 2000 rpm, can you tell me how exactly did you fix this? thanks.
