190E will not start not ovp or fuel accumulator
 

Hi all 1989 190E with 2.6L in it will not start replaced the ovp and fuel accumulator because it was hard to start (ran fine yesterday sometimes would start first try, sometimes take a few tries) now just will not start. Ideas? its making a weird noise from one of the fuel pumps now, still cranks just fine, am starting to get at my wits end....:mad: any help would be great.

Whats the cheap and easy way to check for spark and fuel pressure?

Test your fuel pumps to make sure they are working. It sounds like a fuel pressure problem, fuel devliery problem or an ignition problem. You could also a leak somewhere.

how does one do all of this? check pressure and spark? tried to hold up a spark plug with a plug wire on it I couldn't see any spark on the plug.

What are the colors of your spark plugs?

When was the last time a tune up was done on the car?

To see if there is spark pull the plug and wire and ground it too metal so you dont get shocked. You will need someone to crank the car for you.

okay so did the spark plug thing and yes we have spark, recently change the plugs and wires, color of plugs was normal no black deposits or anything weird still have not done cap and rotor but that will wait a bit, how does one test for fuel psi? my car I think has 2 fuel pumps? how do I test each one? and what psi should each one run? or is there a simpler way to do all this? thanks guys and oracle thanks very much.

To see if your fuel pumps are working remove them from the car and apply the two wires to a battery and it start vibrate/operate.

To see what your fuel pressure is you need a special tool.

okay this might sound like a dumb question but does it matter what kind of battery? like a 9v or just try to hook it up to the car battery?

Use a car battery and apply the wires to each of the battery terminals.

ummm-that sounds really dangerous- one spark-crispy critter...it will still have fuel in it....and I have replaced my own fuel filter and fuel pump...let me tell you it was not fun...make sure you get some really strong clamps and a couple socket extensions handy so you can plug the lines when you remove...watch your eyes too-for some reason i got squirted a few times...also remove the battery cable before messing with it and also unscrew the gas cap..remove the pressure before you really get wet.

okay so are both the fuel pumps the same or is one like high flow and the other low flow? I mean to ask are they the same part? also while I am at it should I just go ahead and replace the fuel filter? thanks again guys and tim thanks for the advice on how not to get a fuel bath :D I already had a diesel shower when a line blew in my 83 300CD :o

You clean out all the gas before testing it on a car battery...

I have an extra car battery lying around just for these purposes to test pumps and other devices.

Ive tested many fuel pumps that way. One pump is to pump it from the tank and the other is too pump it to the engine.

Okay so both made noise but it seems the bottom one made the regular fuel pump noise squirted fuel, the top one made a weird noise (like a gear grinding or motor not winding up) and only dribbled fuel, I had to leave them on the car and just cracked the fuel lines open, I know not very safe (okay very very unsafe and don't try it) but couldn't figure out how to remove them! So my question is this can a fuel pump not working at full power cause an engine not to start.

All the fuel pumps have to do is deliever fuel nothing else.

The next step is to check out your fuel pump relay. If that is shot then no juice will be getting to the pumps

So the dribble is okay? So where is the fuel pump relay and how do I check it? thanks again oracle
