emmissions air pump
 

my air pump is making a funny noise and causing my engine to race i looked up the part and it will cost me a fortune. is it really a necessary part?? what does it do? and how could i make it affordable for me being a college student. i really love my benz. it is a 1984 380 se her name is emma i would do anything to make things right again. i mean she has been garage kept for the past 24 years and everything has been perfect up until this point. help!!!

The air injection pump ON that model & most MB's is a warm-up emissions device.

Allows the catalyst to come on line quicker on cold starts.
