2000 E320, Metal clunking sound when shifting - worn shifter bushing?
Hi all,
MY 2000 E320, around 60K miles on it. Recently it developed a metal clunking sound when I move the shifter from park to gear (and back of course). It reminds me of the similar sound on my old W124 which was cured by replacing a small plastic bushing on the shift linkage, from under the car. Would this be a similar undertaking? Has anyone experienced/done this before? Thank you, Alex |
Similar concern...my guess is the shifter bushings...would need a special tool to remove/install underneath the car.
Can anyone confirm?? '01 E320 |
I replaced it myself, no need for special tools. Just make sure you get the right bushings as there are two kinds, they are a little different. The front one closer to the engine is black in color and ever so slightly smaller and more pliable then the other one which is green in color and harder.
Get an extra long pair of screwdrivers and you can do it after fiddling a bit. The space is very tight but doable. I did it on my back, car on a stand. Good luck. |
