oil in air filter
I have a 1981 3000td wagon. about 2 months after I bought it I noticed a large oil drip under engine. I found the oil filter to be 100% saturated with oil blowing from the valve cover. I have changed the filter but the problem still exists. Could this be a valve adjustement.

If you are getting oil in the AIR filter (like the title of the post says) then you have excess crankcase pressure - either worn pistons or rings - or a blocked breather system.

You are experiencing blowby

When you have blowby, the oil vapor is, in theory, supposed to get sucked through the hose* on top of the valve cover, which then goes through the air cleaner housing lid, and into this little round plastic gadget. Within this gadget, a vortex is supposedly created, throwing the oil particles against the inner wall of said gadget...once heavy enough, gravity is supposed to lead it down this two piece metal tubing system, which eventually lets the afforementioned drops of oil, join its friends in the oil pan, and get ready for another ride.
There are several occasions where this idea falls short of a perfect execution. One of these is when the air cleaner housing mounts break, and the housing gets thrust off of the drain tube. Another, is the tube itself becoming dislodged about halfway down, or at the point of entry back into the engine. I'm sure I have forgotten a couple of other ways you can use your oil. The point is, that yes, you are most likely suffering from blow by, but, a good amount of that oil, ought to be recoverable. *There is an "updated" hose design....the shape is changed from round, to a rectangular (ish) shaped hose, that has a bit more of a pronounced bend in it. btw, if this is a Kaliforniah emissioned car, and the filter is a canister shape, this post is void, as I have no stinkin idea what the MB engineers dreamed up for that part of the country.

Hello again. About 2 hours after I posted my query heavy winds knocked out my internet here in Falls Church, Va. Just getting back online. Thank you everyone for the replies.
I will check each one out. I don't know if I have a good car or a less good one. The previous owner did not believe in PM. |

I see I goofed. I meant to say the air filter was saturated with oil and the air cleaner box was itself was also soaked on the inside and dripping out. I replaced the air filter -twice. Oil is blowing through the hose from the valve cover gasket. It is a 300td and runs well other than an idle that seems to miss a little. The engine screams once the rpm's go up. Thanks .

I guess what I had failed to say, was if the set-up that I described, doesn't work properly, you could end up with an oil soaked filter and housing.
Unless your blow by is so excessive, that the system simply cannot handle to glut of oil coming through. btw...what weight oil are you using?

The oil is 20-50 weight.
